Hyderabad airport opens interim international terminal.

GMR Hyderabad International Airport has inaugurated an interim international departure terminal, set up with an investment of Rs. 50 crore. All internal flights will shift to the new terminal from October 23.
Rajiv Nayan Choubey, Secretary, Ministry of Civil Aviation, inaugurated the 1 lakh sq ft terminal designed to cater to the growth in traffic, while the existing passenger terminal building expands to more than double the present capacity.
The interim terminal is equipped with a host of new technologies, including India’s first ever remote hand baggage screening facility, which can double the passenger throughput at security checkpoints, cutting down wait times and enhancing passenger experience.
GBS Raju, Business Chairman, Airports, GMR Group, said, “Hyderabad Airport has witnessed impressive growth, with the total traffic more than doubling over the past four years.”
SGK Kishore, CEO, GHIAL, said, “The passenger traffic through Hyderabad Airport is growing at about 24 per cent YoY. Even as the main passenger terminal and other airport facilities undergo a large-scale capacity expansion to meet the growth in traffic, we have developed the interim terminal as an extension of the existing airport.”
Commissioned in 2008, the airport was designed to handle 12 million passengers a year. However, it has been growing at hectic pace and is expected to achieve about 20 mppa this year. The airport could meet additional passenger load made possible by making changes and simplifying check-in procedures.
The ongoing expansion is expected to take the airport capacity up to 40 mppa and is likely to take about 30 months to three years to complete, he said.
From handling 36 flights an hour, it will have capability to handle 56 flights. The entire airport has been developed on a modular platform and will become an integrated airport once fully completed. The new terminal commissioned today is based on pre-fab technology and can be dismantled and used elsewhere, he said.
Currently, 22 airlines operate international flights from Hyderabad. On an average, the airport handles over 5,500 international departing passengers and 32 international flight departures daily, connecting to 29 global destinations.
The new terminal is located close to the Haj terminal and is adjacent to the international pier of the main passenger terminal building. It can be accessed from both sides of the airport.
