10 Railway Stations to be Smart Stations Soon

Rail Land Development Authority joins hands with National Building Construction Corporation, to fast track the process for redevelopment of ten railway stations across the country on global standards. The ten railway stations to be redeveloped as smart station will be in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Rajasthan and Kerala in a few years.

The identified stations to be taken up initially by NBCC for redevelopment are Tirupati, Sarai Rohilla (in Delhi), Nellore, Puducherry, Madgaon, Lucknow, Gomtinagar, Kota, Thane (New) and Ernakulam – will get iconic structures with modern state-of-the-art facilities, passenger lounges and congestion-free non-conflicting entry and exit to station premises. These will also have commercial space to set up business centre, offices, studio apartments and hotels.

An MoU was signed between RLDA, an arm of the Railways for commercial exploitation of rail and land and NBCC, a PSU of urban development ministry for implementation of station redevelopment projects for the ten identified stations.

The MoU was signed in the presence of railway minister Suresh Prabhu and urban development minister M Venkaiah Naidu. The railways has embarked on an ambitious project to redevelop 403 stations with the participation of private players, public sector entities and foreign agencies.

Prabhu said that they have chosen PPP model and are roping in varied agencies to execute the project namely Railways’ own PSUs, other Central government PSUs, foreign countries through government-to-government cooperation and state governments.

NBCC chief Anoop Kumar Mittal said that the ten stations will be developed on public-private partnership (PPP) model and self-sustaining finance model through commercial exploitation of vacant railway land. He added the commercial use of built-up space and air space over tracks shall be leased out for a period of 40-60 years.

RLDA and NBCC shall form a Special Purpose Vehicle in the form of a joint venture company to execute the station redevelopment project. The JV shall redevelop the stations on a self-financing model.

NBCC has now been given 10 stations in first phase for redevelopment and more stations would be given to them in subsequent phases.
