Amara Raja Batteries begins work on third automotive battery plant.
Amara Raja Batteries Ltd has laid the foundation for its third automotive battery plant at its Growth Corridor in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh.
In the first phase, the new facility will have a capacity to manufacture 6.5 million units. The Rs. 700-crore Phase I project is expected to employ 1,300 people at its full capacity.
The plant is designed to scale up to 10.8 million units, making it one of the largest battery manufacturing facilities of its kind in the country.
Ramachandra N Galla, Chairman, Amara Raja Batteries Ltd, said, “The country is experiencing a phenomenal rate of growth, which has opened up a plethora of opportunities for increasing production and consumption. We have consolidated our leadership by expanding our capacities and adopting advanced technologies, both in automotive, as well as industrial products.”
“We have witnessed significant growth across all our business verticals over the year and we are confident of registering even greater growth rates, in the coming times,” he said.
Given the buoyancy in the batteries business and demand expectations, the Board of Directors of the batteries major had approved for the expansion project in August 2018.
Andhra Pradesh Industries Minister Amaranatha Reddy laid the foundation for the new plant.
The company had recently signed a technology collaboration agreement with its long-time partner, Johnson Controls to introduce advanced battery technologies.
As per the agreement, the two companies will share tech know how in the areas of Starting, Lighting and Ignition (SLI), Enhanced Flooded Batteries (EFB) and Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) batteries all suited for Bharat stage VI norms.
The company supplies automotive batteries under OE relationships to Ashok Leyland, Ford India, Honda, Hyundai, Mahindra & Mahindra, Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors.
It's industrial and automotive batteries are exported to countries in the Indian Ocean Rim.
