Amrut projects to transform cityscape in 3 years.

A decade ago, Kozhikode city, despite its long traditions of trade and commerce, was identified only as an over-grown town. Nevertheless, after the implementation of several schemes under the Kerala Sustainable Urban Development Programme (KSUDP), the city is slowly transforming into a metropolis, providing better services to residents.
Now, with the rampant urbanisation of the city (67.15% as per 2011 Census), the projects envisaged under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (Amrut) will not only improve basic facilities but also change the cityscape in the next three years.

Both the Centre and State are now focussing on improving the condition of growing cities. Priority is given to those living and moving to cities along with rural development, P.S. Mohammed Sagir, mission director, State Mission Management Unit, told The Hindu on Thursday.

He said that the Centre had approved the third and final plan for 2017-20. The proposals had been submitted under five components including water supply, sewerage, stormwater drains, transport, and development of green spaces and parks with a special provision for meeting the needs of children.

Kozhikode will get funds to the tune of ₹113.5 crore. Projects worth ₹71.03 crore and ₹90.10 crore had been approved for implementation for 2015-16 and 2016-17 respectively.

Government contribution

The government had decided to contribute 15% of the project cost out of the 20% share of the urban local body for waste supply and septage management, Mr. sagir said.

With a population of 6,13,255 (2011 Census), Kozhikode is the second most populated city in the State after Thiruvananthapuram. The density of population in the geographic extent of 118.59 sq km is 5,171 persons per km. A study conducted for Amrut said that Kozhikode was one of the priority cities in the State, and that it had been enlisted as one of the best liveable cities in the country.

Water supply

However, the coverage of water supply connections in the city is 44%. The total length of water supply distribution pipeline laid in the city is 246 km. The ongoing Japan-aided drinking water project will meet the demand for water and storage requirement of the city.

Kozhikode has no sewerage system. The KSUDP had prepared a sewerage master plan for the old corporation area. The master plan envisaged establishment of sewerage facilities for the entire city in different phases, he said.
