BDD Chawl Redevelopment Project Gets Three Bidders

BDD Chawl Redevelopment Project Gets Three Bidders. After much struggle to find developers for the redevelopment project of Bombay Development Directorate (BDD) chawls at Worli, the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) after a third extension opened the technical tender and it has received three bids so far. The third tender call for the project involves the redevelopment of some 121 chawls comprising of thousands of residents was to be opened on July 18 but was opened on July 28.

Earlier, the last day for submission of e-bid was July 17. The same was extended to July 27. It appears that one of the consortia has a Chinese company in it. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has claimed that Chinese companies will require security clearance.

The three consortia include Arabian Construction Company along with SAL Holdings and ACC India; Capital Infra Project along with Tata Project and Citic Constructions; and China Construction Engineering Corporation along with IL&FS.

Confirming the same, Subhash Lakhe, the chief officer of Mumbai Board said that they opened the technical bid and three consortia came ahead. They had a global tender hence they have such foreign names. The China Construction Engineering Corporation does look like a Chinese company for now. They will evaluate and only those companies which go through the process set by them will have their financial bids opened.

According to Fadnavis, any foreign company can bid in any project in India. The government has allowed all foreign companies. But mostly in the case of Chinese companies they ask for security clearance.

This was the third time that MHADA came up with an extension for the redevelopment of BDD chawls and finally found bidders.

This is one of the most ambitious projects whose tenders are worth Rs 9,000 crore. The project involves the entire revamp of around 121 buildings in Worli, spread across over 50 acres of land. Apart from rehousing the existing tenants in the redeveloped structure, the project will also create 16,000 affordable houses. The existing tenant will receive a 500 square feet apartment each in the redeveloped structure.
