BHEL may get 2,400-MW project

The Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited beat the L&T and Korea’s Doosan in a tender as it has appeared as the lowest bidder to build a 2,400-MW project.

The contract includes the engineering, procurement and construction of three 800 MW units coal-fired power plant which is being built by NTPC and the Patratu Thermal Power Station.

The project was estimated to be valued at nearly Rs 14,000 crore, but BHEL's might have won the tender with its lowest bid of Rs 11,628 crore. BHEL’s bid was about 13.7% cheaper than L&T's Rs 13,220 crore, while Doosan's bid was significantly higher at Rs 22,792 crore.

The companies wants to win this project as it is one of the rarely active bid in the thermal power sector, where generators are not taking up new projects because of the lack of demand from state-run power distribution companies.
