BRO Constructs World’s Highest Motorable Road in Ladakh

Border Roads Organisation – BRO constructs world’s highest motorable road in Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir, at a height of over 19,300 feet. This road build by BRO under ‘Project Himank’ will pass through Umlingla Top. The 86 km long road is close to Hanle and is of strategic importance as it connects Chisumle and Demchok villages which are located 230 Kms from Leh. According to BRO authorities, both these villages are a stone’s throw away from the Indo-China border in eastern sector.

Brigadier DM Purvimath, who is the Chief Engineer of ‘Project Himank’ felicitated BRO personnel for completing this herculean task, pointing out that constructing the road at an altitude of over 19,300 feet was filled with life threatening challenges, especially when the location is always adverse for construction activities. He went on to add, “During peak summers, temperature hovers around minus 10-20 degrees Celsius, and in winters, it dips to minus 40 degrees. Oxygen level at the altitude is 50 per cent less than at normal places”. Purvimath further added, “Efficiency of machines and manpower declines by 50 per cent due to harsh climate and less oxygen level”. The challenges of human operation at this high altitude were no less. “The personnel faced serious health problems like loss of memory, eyesight and high blood pressure”, said Purvimath. He continued, “Machine operators have to come down every 10 minutes for oxygen”. Bringing attention to major challenges of handling logistics at such a high altitude, he said, “Taking equipment at such a height, repairing and maintaining it is a major task since equipment face a lot of breakdowns”.
