With the start of well foundation process on India’s longest 9.8 km river bridge across the river Ganga near Patna, the construction work will finally begin.

The well foundation works are being carried out by Korean firm Daewoo engineering and Construction Company limited, in a joint venture with L&T India is executing the Rs 4,988.4 crore bridge project.

The six-lane bridge over Ganga river will connect Kacchi Dargarh in Patna to Bidupur in Haijipur in Indian state of Bihar. The bridge construction works will be completed by 2020.

Road construction minister Tejashwi Yadav on Thursday said that work commenced on largest six lane bridge on Ganga River. Timely check on things will accelerate the work progress.

The 9.76-km-long river bridge will have a total of 67 pillars and will cost around Rs 5,000 crores (Rs 50 billion).

Authorities said that upon completion in 2020, the bridge over Ganga river in Bihar will provide an easy roadway link between the northern and southern parts of the state and will also reduce the traffic in the capital city of Patna.

Right now, Bhupen Hazarika bridge connecting Assam to Arunachal Pradesh having a total length of 9.15 km is considered the longest bridge in India. Brahmputra River was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in May last year.
