Crude Oil Worth Rs 49 Crores Stolen From Cairn India Plant in Rajasthan

Rajasthan Police recently unearthed one of the biggest theft of crude oil from a plant of Cairn India company in Barmer district. Interestingly, the theft the tune of Rs 49 crores went undetected for six months by company officials.

The whole theft was conducted through tankers which came to collect water, a byproduct of oil field excavation in the plant. But they were filled with crude oil which was later sold to other persons outside the plant. The GPS systems were disabled to prevent anyone from tracking trucks, police said.

The theft was uncovered when Rajasthan Police after it busted a smuggling network of drivers and contractors. District police chief Gangandeep Singla said many contractors and drivers are wanted in the case. Deciphering the details of the theft, Singla said they started action after the company, a subsidiary of Vedanta filed a complaint with the Police. He said more than 30 tractors were seized and the number is likely to grow. The stolen oil was sold to small factory owners who stockpiled in underground tanks. The crude oil was used in Road Construction and diesel production.

Earlier, a racket in Mathura was busted in stealing petrol worth Rs. 100 crore from a pipeline of Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. The accused bought land adjoining the refinery of the company and drilled a connection to the pipeline of the refinery.

DIG Agra range Mahesh Kumar Mishra had announced the National Security Act would be invoked on the 17 accused men involved in the racket which comprised policemen, IOCL staff and others.
