Four city roads to be renovated.
Following the model of the City Road Improvement Project (CRIP) that helped the modernisation of six major roads within the Corporation limit, the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) is likely to fund the renovation of four other major city roads in the Kozhikode North Assembly constituency. Public Works Department (PWD) sources say a total of ₹319 crore will be earmarked for the four projects, which is likely to begin after the completion of the ongoing renovation of East Hill-Ganapathikavu-Karaparamba road.
The four projects are Puthiyangadi-Malikadavu-Karaparamba road, Karaparamba-Balussery road, Kannadikkal-Thadampattuthazham-Paroppady road and Mavoor-Medical College-Karanthur road. They will require land acquisition in some spots which will be completed with the support of landowners. PWD officials say a four-lane road is under consideration between the Karaparamba-Vengeri stretch of the Karaparamba-Balussery road with more service ducts and drainages.
Other than the widening and creation of better drainage facilities, the PWD will set up safer junctions, proper navigation, walkways and street lights. Since all the roads are directly connected with a number of small urban service roads, residents will directly get the benefits of their renovation, apart from several other government institutions located closer to the roads.
For the Puthiyangadi-Malikadavu-Karaparamba road project alone, KIIFB is likely to invest ₹151 crore. A. Pradeepkumar, MLA, says land acquisition is required on some stretches. He adds that the already inaugurated ₹21-crore works of the East Hill-Ganapathikavu-Karaparamba can be completed in fast-track mode to begin the other projects.
PWD Officials say the renovation of Kannadikkal-Thadampattuthazham-Paroppady road will be completed at a cost of ₹147 crore. A Detailed Project Report (DPR) had already been submitted along with the 12-km stretch Mavoor-Medical College-Karanthur road. The Karaparamba-Balussery road project had already received technical sanction.
