Gorewada International Zoo project worth Rs 451.35 crore to be developed on the outskirts of the Nagpur city has been granted final stage II forest clearance from the Forest Advisory Committee (FAC) of the ministry of environment, forest and climate change (MoEFCC) on Tuesday.
The city’s signature project got its stage-I clearance on May 25 and Forest Development Corporation of Maharashtra (FDCM) subsequently depositing Rs 13.73 crore towards net present value (NPV) and compensatory afforestation cost on June14. The same was reported by TOI.
The forest officials said that following the final clearance, work order for the construction of Indian Safari and reservoir will be issued soon to both the successful bidders who have been shortlisted through e-tendering process.
The letter issued by the MoEFCC states that stage-II approval to the project has been granted following the conditions fulfilled by the FDCM on June 14. This is perhaps one of the fastest clearance granted to any project.
Though the clearance has been granted for diversion of 564 hectare forest land, the state government has been asked to ensure that only 15% of the diverted area (79.07 hectares) is utilized for non-forestry activities.
Indian Safari is to come up in 145 hectares but the actual construction as per the FAC will be in 6.37 hectares. It will house animals like tigers, leopards, sloth bears and herbivores.
Similarly, the reservoir will be built on 28 hectares and its water will be utilized for the wildlife. Both the attractions will be built on the left side of the Nagpur-Katol Road.
The FDCM has been asked to raise compensatory afforestation on zudpi jungle land within a period of three years and hand it over to forest department.
Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has set deadline for completing Indian Safari project by December 2018.
