JSW Infrastructure & Logistics opens 18 million tpa Paradip iron ore terminal

JSW Infrastructure & Logistics, the port operating unit of the JSW Group, has opened a new 18 million tpa capacity iron ore terminal at the Paradip Port Trust in Jagatsinghpur district of Odisha on 25 November 2019. JSW Infrastructure & Logistics has commissioned its new terminal by loading approximately 60,000 tonne of iron ore pellets on the bulk carrier MV IC Phoenix for the company, Brahmani River Pellets.
The company was awarded the rights by the Central government-owned Paradip Port Trust to develop a fully mechanised iron ore export terminal on a build, operate and transfer (BOT) basis for 30 years.

The company invested about Rs 750 crore to build the facility. The 370 mtr long terminal is designed to handle capsize vessels for iron ore and pellet exports and can load 1,00,000 tpd. The high load rate is expected to significantly reduce pre-berthing delays at Paradip as well as allow incremental cargo flow to the port.

The terminal has two ship-loaders, each with a capacity of 7,000 tonne per hour. It also has an 8,00,000 cargo storage yard with rotary and tandem wagon tipplers to enable fast rake unloading.

The ports run by JSW Infrastructure & Logistics at Jaigarh and Dharamtar in Maharashtra and in Goa and Paradip have a combined capacity of over 100 tonne and handle a combined 65 million tonne of cargo in FY19 of which some 90 percent was the group’s own cargo.

By 2025, captive cargo and third-party cargo mix will be 50:50. JSW Infrastructure & Logistics intends to build a port capacity for handling 200 tonne by 2022 and 300 tonne by 2025 to help handle 215 tonne of cargo.

Of this, more than 100 tonne will be Group cargo and the balance will be third-party cargo. The third-party cargo will come mostly from the just commissioned iron ore terminal, a new 30 million tonne coal terminal which will open in 2020 at the Paradip Port Trust, 10 million tonne from Jaigarh port and another 30 million tonne from other facilities.
