Mumbais Coastal Road Project to Respite Parking Woes
The ambitious Rs.15,000-crore Mumbai’s coastal road project, phase I may come as a respite for the city struggling with parking spaces. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has managed to reclaim around 70 hectares of land to build multiple entry and exit points at the three interchange areas along the Marine drive to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link stretch.
The first interchange will be at Amarsons garden in Breach Candy, where 26 hectares of land will be reclaimed and can accommodate approximately 345 cars.
The second interchange will be at Haji Ali, where 23.5 hectares of land will be reclaimed and can accommodate approximately 1,600 cars.
The third and last interchange will be at Worli, where 18.5 hectares of land will be able to provide parking for at least 715 cars, according to an official source.
These areas will include three parking lots along with other public facilities. These parking lots will be able to accommodate approximately 2,660 vehicles.
Apart from this, the civic body will also undertake beautification of the area. A promenade, garden, walkway, and a cycling track is on the cards.
Last year, to fast track the approval process from the state and the Central governments, the BMC divided the costal road in to two phases. Instead of awaiting clearance for the entire 29.2-km long – Princess Street flyover to Kandivli – stretch, the civic body sought separate clearances for phase I — Princess Street flyover to Bandra Worli sea link — and phase II — Bandra to Kandivli.
The cost of phase I of the eight lane road, with two dedicated bus lanes, is pegged at Rs7,000 crore. The project includes an under-sea tunnel from Princess Street to Priyadarshani Park, followed by a coastal road till Worli, and a connector between the sea link and Carter Road.
