Nagpur to Implement Rs.1,000 Crore Solar Project, Aims to Power 1.30 Lakh Street Lights
The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has announced that it is gearing up to implement a Rs1,000 crore solar project to power 1.30 lakh street lights, buildings and some parts of water and sewage treatment plants, followed by operation and maintenance for 20 years. There will be no extra financial burden on NMC, rather it will save over Rs.500 crore. NMC will become the country’s foremost to do so if the project implements.
NMC electrical department has chosen three companies — Chennai-based Broil Solar Energy, Raipur-based Shanti GD Ispat and Power, and city-based Rohit Steel — for executing the project. The standing committee will take a resolution on issuing work orders to the companies in the meeting on February 21.
The companies will develop solar infrastructure worth over Rs.300 crore at their own cost inside eight months. The companies will operate and maintain the systems for 20 years. NMC will pay Rs. 945.34 crore to the companies over 20 years.
