Piped Gas Project Can Expand To Northern Districts If Kochi Phase Is Successful

If the city gas project in Ernakulam, for delivering cooking gas through piped connections, is
successful, it could be expanded to northern districts of Kerala, state government has informed the Kerala High Court.

The submission by the government was in the form of a counter affidavit filed by chief secretary KM Abraham in response to a petition (WP-C No. 32546/2017) filed by D Raghunath.

Government said in the affidavit, “It is submitted that the Gas Authority of India Ltd. (GAIL) is in the process of laying Liquefied Natural gas line from Puthuvype in Ernakulam District to Bangalore and Mangalore in the State of Karnataka. The pipelines under the scheme are drawn through the revenue districts of Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Palakkad, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod. The City Gas Project for Ernakulam is the pilot project and the success of the same will necessarily result in carrying out such projects in the other northern districts of Kerala through which the GAIL pipeline is passing through. It is submitted that the above projects will therefore necessarily result in the overall development of the northern districts of Kerala which are predominantly underdeveloped compared to the southern districts of the state.”

Further, government said in the affidavit that implementation of City Gas Distribution Project would bring down the cost of cooking gas by one-third of the present rate and is environment-friendly and pollution-free when compared to other fossil fuels.

As per the affidavit, Indian Oil Adani Gas Private Limited, which is implementing the project, is a company formed under public-private participation. Fifty per cent of the shares in the company are held by Indian Oil Corporation and Adani Gas Ltd each. Government said in the affidavit that similar city gas distribution projects are being implemented in other parts of the country.
