Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently inaugurated Amul’s ultra-modern chocolate plant in Anand, and said the cooperative movement is an appropriate alternative to capitalist and socialist systems of economies.

Recognising the contribution of the cooperative movement and the dairy sector to the farming community, and in livelihood generation, Modi said Amul is an example of an economy where neither the government nor the merchants have all the controls.

Addressing a gathering of milk producers, he said: “Amul isn’t just any other manufacturing or milk processing business. This is a model of an alternative economy. The world was familiar with only two systems of economies — socialism and capitalism. Stalwarts like Sardar Patel sowed the seeds of the third system of economy — cooperation, where neither the government nor the merchants control the economy.”

On a day-long visit to Gujarat recently, Modi inaugurated projects worth over Rs. 1,100 crore including Kaira District Milk Producers Union’s (Amul Dairy) fully-automated chocolate plant. The plant is located in the newly built Tribhuvandas Food Complex, named after Tribhuvandas K Patel, noted cooperative movement leader and founder-chairman of Amul.

Meanwhile, on the day of Modi’s visit to Anand, Sabar Dairy, an affiliate of the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (marketer of Amul), announced a reduction in milk procurement price by Rs. 20 per kg fat. This is the second cut in the procurement price after a reduction of Rs. 40 about two months ago.

Modi also visited Anjar in Kutch, where he inaugurated a greenfield 5 mtpa LNG terminal at Mundra by GSPC LNG, and the longest inter-State gas transmission pipeline of Gujarat State Petronet Ltd. This is the third LNG terminal to come up in the State after Dahej and Hazira.

“The fourth LNG terminal is also progressing. This is making Gujarat an LNG hub and gateway for the rest of India to secure energy. The LNG terminals in Gujarat are providing energy to the eastern coast as well. We cannot alleviate poverty if we are energy poor. A strong energy sector is needed for the growth of any country,” said the PM.

Modi concluded his Gujarat visit at Rajkot. He inaugurated a Mahatma Gandhi museum at Alfred High School, where Gandhiji had done his higher secondary studies. The 164-year-old school was shut down by the authorities last year since there were not enough students enrolled in it.

The most deserving candidate for the UN Champion of Earth award is Mahatma Gandhi, said Modi while inaugurating the museum.

Last week, Modi, along with French President Emmanuel Macron, had been selected for the UN award for their pioneering work in championing the International Solar Alliance and promoting cooperation on environmental action.
