Railway Comes to the Rescue of Maharashtra Farmers by Building a Cold Storage Warehouse
Railway Comes to the Rescue of Maharashtra Farmers by Building a Cold Storage Warehouse. Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis laid the foundation stone for building of a cold storage at Lasalgaon near Nashik. CONCOR (Container Corporation of India Ltd.), a Public Sector Unit associated with Indian Railway will be developing a 2500 MT cold storage facility at Lasalgaon. 1500 MT will be dedicated specifically for storage of onions and the remaining space of the warehouse will be allocated to perishable items like fruits and vegetables.
The facility will be helpful even for farmers from adjoining locations like Jalgaon, Manmad, Dhule etc. The warehouse will cost INR 5 crores and will be built on a CSR model. Indian railways play a major role in transportation of onions from producers to various consumer markets of the country and tries to allots wagons on a priority bases for transportation of onion. Thanks to the fluctuating weather conditions, the onion produce fluctuates greatly from year to year. Some years the produce is much below expected and some years there is a bumper crop.
In case of excessive produce it becomes inevitable to have well equipped cold storage warehouses closer to the point of pick-up for easy transportation and reduction in spoilage and wastage. This helps to achieve price stabilization. Maharashtra produces 33% of annual onion produce in India and such warehouses not only benefit the farmers of Maharashtra but also prevent national losses.
A cold storage warehouse also ensures reduction in material and farming cost through reduction in weight and spoilage as well as eliminating the labour cost involved in turning and shuffling of onions in the conventional storage methods.
