Sewage treatment plant to be set up.
After several attempts to curb sewage inflow to the canals of the city, the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation has finally come up with a plan to ensure that untreated water is not let into the canals.
The civic body is going to set up a waste water treatment plant that uses the Anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) technology.
Energy generation
The widely used technology filters the sewage and separates the effluent and sludge which is later treated anaerobically with mesophilic bacteria.
The plant would be capable of producing methane as a by-product which can be used to generate energy.
The city generates over 150 million litres of sewage per day and a considerable quantity of it goes into the three irrigation canals - Bandar, Ryves and Eluru - Budameru rivulet and Krishna River.
According to the civic officials, the proposed plant would be installed at the Municipal Guest House premises on the bund of Bandar Canal where 2.5 million litres of sewage per day is expected to be treated.
The plant treatment capacity would be 300 cubic metres per day, officials said.
The municipal corporation has already invited proposals from eligible firms for the project.
