Speed up Smart City projects: Pinarayi.
Nearly 25 projects estimated to cost ₹165 crore, to be implemented in Kochi as part of the Smart City project package, will be tendered before December 31.
A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting convened by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan here on Monday. The meeting was attended by the representatives of the Kerala Water Authority, Kerala State Electricity Board, Kochi Metro Rail Ltd., and Kochi Corporation.
The Smart City authorities hope to inaugurate the Hospital Road Walkway development project and Bicycle Sharing Project, which were taken up as part of the Smart City scheme, this year.
The Chief Minister took a critical view of the delay in the implementation of the projects. While pointing out that the city was ranked 5th in the list of first 20 smart cities, the Chief Minister said the implementation should gain momentum, said an official who was privy to the proceedings.
With the Project Management Consultants of the Kochi project in place, the implementation is expected to gain pace. Cochin Smart Mission Ltd. had recently signed an agreement with the New Delhi-based IPE Global Ltd., which was selected as the Project Management Consultant.
The mandate of the consultant will be to design, develop, manage and implement programmes identified under the Kochi Smart City Mission.
It was suggested at the meeting that a Detailed Town Planning Scheme should come into force for Fort Kochi, Mattancherry and Central Business District, which is the central city area, by the first week of January. Incidentally, it would be in these areas that the projects proposed under the Smart City would be implemented.
The progress of the 24x7 water supply scheme, to be implemented by the Kerala Water Authority and the Water Metro, a project pushed by Kochi Metro Rail Ltd., was also reviewed at the meeting. The water metro is expected to link the islands in the Kochi backwaters and serve as a feeder to the metro rail.
