Suez to set up water management projects worth Rs 1,700 cr

France-based Suez is working on two water management projects worth EUR 217 million (over Rs 1,700 crore) in New Delhi and Mangaluru in Karnataka.
A waste water treatment plant is being set up at Okhla in New Delhi at a cost of EUR 145 million and will be operational within three years. Besides, a EUR 72 million water distribution project in Mangaluru will kick off by January 2020.

The company was awarded the Okhla project by the Delhi Jal Board. Once the project becomes operational, the plant will remove 41,200 kg organic pollutant load per day and 61,600 kg solid load per day from the Yamuna.

The water treatment project in Mangaluru has been awarded by the civic body of Mangaluru and financed by the Asian Development Bank. The project includes extension, rehabilitation and operation of the drinking water distribution system which covers an area of 132 km, including 96,300 connections and 2,148 km water distribution network. The contract period is for 11.5 years and will ensure 24x7 water supply for the city and its 5,50,000 inhabitants.

The contract awarded to Suez India in Mangaluru is part of the city's water and waste management plan which seeks to upgrade the entire distribution system.

In the initial three years, the company will design and lay down 1,388 km drinking water network, design and construct a filter house, clear water sump and pumping stations. This will be be followed by an eight-year period of operation and maintenance of the entire drinking water distribution system.
