Thales to set up engineering competence centre in Bengaluru
With the controversial Scorpene submarine deal behind it, French military equipment maker Thales is making a fresh start with a slew of new projects including the setting up of an engineering competence centre which will serve its global needs.
Pascale Sourisse, CEO, International Development, Thales, told BusinessLinethe Scorpene project comprising six submarines has already been delivered. The company is now looking forward to implementing the Rafale fighter jet project in partnership with Dassault. Thales will provide the avionics, optronics and electronic warfare.
“Thales is the world leader in the field of sonars and we are eager to participate in sonar programmes, mine-hunters, submarines, etc. Thales’ onboard Indian Scorpene class submarines include sonar, electronic surveillance measure and external communication suites,” Sourisse said.
She also said the engineering competence centre here will focus on software and hardware capabilities in the areas of civil as well as defence businesses, serving Thales’ global needs. The centre itself will hire about 1,500 engineers in 3-5 years. The total number of people who will be hired, including those who will be working at the centre over the next three years, will be around 6,000, she added.Thales, which signed a contract for Mirage 2000 upgrade in 2011, has completed its share of work and now HAL is executing the contract, she added. “Thales’s planned work share on the Mirage 2000 upgrade programme was completed in 2018. More than 5,000 pieces of equipment were delivered on time,” she said. In 2018, Thales had sourced products and services worth over €100 million. It has engaged with over 50 offset partners and has over 75 supply chain partners across defence and ground transportation markets, she further said.
