Two-year deadline set to build Kundannoor flyover.
The Roads and Bridges Development Corporation of Kerala (RBDCK) has set a two-year deadline for the six-lane flyover proposed at Kundannoor Junction.
The work will begin from December end if everything works out as scheduled. The PWD (NH) wing had set an 18-month deadline for Vyttila flyover, work on which is set to begin on December 11.
“We have set a two-year deadline since agencies that have laid pipelines and cables beneath the NH Bypass do not have drawings of their precise location. These utility lines will have to be traced when piling commences,” official sources said.
“Six contractors have responded to our tender estimated at ₹81 crore. Their technical bids are being evaluated. The financial bid of contractors who qualify will be opened in a week and work will be awarded in another two or three days. The flyover will have a gradient in the 1:30 ratio - meaning a vertical climb of 1 metre for every 30 metre distance,” they added.
PWD supervision
In the meantime, the RBDCK is learnt to have sought the Public Work Department’s (PWD) overall supervision during the two-year construction period. This is primarily because the PWD planned and finalised the structure’s design.
Palarivattom flyover
This is the second flyover project being undertaken by the RBDCK, the first one being at Palarivattom Bypass Junction which was commissioned over a year ago.
The Palarivattom flyover invited flak after undulations developed around its expansion joints, providing a bumpy ride to motorists.
“The contractor has agreed to replace the expansion joints and resurface the flyover since it is well within the defect-liability period,” sources said.
Taking note of this, the agency will adopt expansion-joint-free technology for Kundannoor flyover. This was earlier used by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation for the Edappally flyover and for Pachalam and A.L. Jacob overbridges.
It ensures a smooth ride for motorists and calls for lesser maintenance. It has also been decided to fix pre-cast girders, thus saving time and causing least traffic disruption.
