V O C Port Authority seeks EoI to develop box transhipment hub

V O Chidambaranar Port Authority has sought expression of interest (EoI) from private firms to develop the port’s outer harbour into a container transhipment hub.

The project will see an investment of Rs 7,200 crore. Once fully operational in two phases, the outer harbour project will have a capacity to handle four million TEUs a year.

The outer harbour project will comprise two container terminals, each having a berth length of one km, water depth of 18 mtr and other infrastructure to accommodate 22,000 TEU-capacity ships.

The private operator winning the outer harbour deal will have to construct breakwater in the Northern side (about 3,450 mtr length) and Southern side (around 2,050 mtr length), two berths of 1,000 mtr quay length each and mechanise the berths to handle containers, dredge alongside the berth and outer harbour basin to 16.9 mtr and approach channel to 17.4 mtr to handle 16 mtr draught vessels in Phase-1.

In Phase-2, the dock basin and the approach channel will be deepened to 19 mtr and 19.6 mtr, respectively, to handle 18 mtr draught vessels.

The investment of Rs 7,200 crore includes breakwater worth Rs 1,020 crore, berth construction cost of Rs 760 crore, yard development and other shore facilities of Rs 580 crore, mechanisation cost of Rs 3,230 crore, dredging cost of Rs 1,390 crore (for 16 mtr draught), and contingencies and project management consultant (PMC) cost of Rs 220 crore.
