Work starts on pipelines for IndianOil terminal near Chennai

Preliminary works to lay new pipelines from Ennore to the Chennai Petroleum Corporation Ltd (CPCL) refinery in Manali have commenced.

The work is part of the proposal to shift Indian Oil Corporation Ltd's (IOCL) product terminals at Korukkupet and Tondiarpet to Vallur in Tiruvallur district, which is located on the outskirts of Chennai.

The total cost of the project is Rs 730 crore and this includes laying of pipelines and construction of terminal.

The terminals, which presently cater to the fuel needs of Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and other neighbouring districts of the Tamil Nadu capital, have been in operation for many decades now from thickly populated north Chennai.

Decision to shift them was taken following orders from various bodies, including the National Green Tribunal and Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisations.
